 BATIK

I've always been artistic in one way another and consider myself to be a "mixed media" artist because of my many interests. I often combine techniques when possible to create desired effects. Although I enjoy many forms of art I especially like useful, wearable and recycled art. However, my new love is Batik. In 2004 while taking a Batik class in Colorado I did a onesie for my son and soon after Baby Bugs clothing line was born!

For more info. please visit the individual pages on my site. Each item is Hand Batiked and dyed right here in Talkeetna, Alaska.  100% cotton 100% unique. Also check out my new "Soywax Art Batiks". ENJOY!

"Sunset with the Moon"

30"x35" on cotton linen.

Batik with Soywax, my new favorite. I'm doing more of these just for artsake. This one was in a Talkeetna Artists' Guild gallery show at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar December 2006.

Art Batiks! Theses are some soywax batiks "in the works". These will be on display and for sale at my summer festival booths. Look for more in local Talkeetna galleries and art shows this year.

*BATIK IS AN ANCIENT ART THAT IS SLOWLY BECOMING MORE POPULAR AS A CONTEMPORARY ART FORM. IT IS CREATED BY APPLYING MELTED WAX TO FABRIC AND THEN DYEING IT (HAND OR VAT), THE WAX ACTS AS A RESIST. AFTER REMOVING THE WAX THE DESIGN REMAINS. OFTEN THE PROCESS IS REPEATED MANY TIMES FOR A LAYERED EFFECT AND MULTIPLE COLORS.

A look into the process, one at a time I freehand wax them with a tjanting.

 Next comes the color!

Fun!!!

Air-dry...

then to the dry cleaners, and after one more hot wash & dry they are done and ready to look cute on any kidlett.

Alaska style...

All Baby Bugs are 100% cotton, 100% unique and hand batiked.

I hope you enjoyed a peek into my process and the art of BATIK...
